A few thoughts:

It has been dubbed the best physics and math department. In countless interviews, Simons actually disagrees with that characterization.

Finance doesn't need to lend itself to anything. The basis of our understanding of reality and any subset of that reality is described--or attempted to be--in mathematics and physics.

I haven't read Emanuel Derman's book, so I wouldn't know what to say about this unfortunately. It sounds very interesting!
