I've voted for Bernie in consecutive primary elections now.
I think that the problem is likely the most obvious one; the candidate that can't translate votes in the south or the "battleground" states inevitably loses the ticket.
It's part to do with a system that is not perfect, it's part to do with the voter demographic, and it's part to do with finding a candidate that will broadly appeal to all Americans whilst also committing to the right change.
I think Barack Obama choosing someone like Biden as his vice president is a testament to the fact that you need the broad acceptance and familiarity with that older voting demographic (who also consistently votes more actively by proportion than any other age groups).
Change, real change, occurs very slowly. And it usually doesn't happen without setback or obstruction. We often forget that, I feel.
