Will Cyberpunk 2077 Live up to the Hype?
It’s a good game.
It’s not an incredible game. For anybody thinking it’s mind-blowingly good, or is thinking it is going to be mind-blowingly good, you’ll be disappointed.
CD Projekt Red took a lot of great ideas from Rockstar. In a lot of ways, Cyberpunk feels like a futuristic, dystopian Grand Theft Auto that is filling the void between GTA 5 and GTA 6. It has more depth in the story, the graphics are a bit better, things are generally a bit more detailed, but everything from the dynamics in the open world in between jobs and the hovering of your map feels like you’re playing a familiar game.
I had a lot of fun playing Witcher 3. This is partially because I never played Skyrim and partially because Witcher 3 is an incredible game. I played Witcher years after it came out and thought it was one of the greatest experiences I’ve had — outside of my usual competitive gaming that revolves exclusively around Dota 2. Witcher was fantasy, action-rpg, and a fantastic narrative. The world was beautiful and felt refreshing.
I’ve played the entire GTA series. Witcher was a series and a genre I hardly dabble in — and so it felt new and amazing. A lot of people who play Cyberpunk I will bet have played games like Cyberpunk. That doesn’t make Cyberpunk bad or disappointing. They didn’t need to re-invent the wheel to make an enjoyable game.
The main story took a little under 20 hours to complete. I honestly had a lot of fun and the story was quirky, cheesy, but generally good. The flow of the game felt good when it wasn’t overloaded with long-winded cut scenes.
If you’re expecting a game to change your life, you’re going to be disappointed. Cyberpunk is another game from a great game company.
In another year or two, and I’m probably being generous, I don’t think many people will remember it. That’s not a knock on Cyberpunk or CD Projekt Red. There are game titles I played in the past that were good games that I forgot about in a few months.
Witcher left an impression on me I haven’t forgotten since. I don’t know exactly why. Everything about that game made me want to enjoy it as much as I can. I’m…
